PRESS RELEASE
*IIT Kharagpur Signs a Historical MoU for Human and Societal Development Initiatives in Malda*
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has entered into a historical Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for human and societal development initiatives in Malda. The collaboration represents a unique initiative linking a premier academic institution with a legislative representative to advance technology-enabled development in the region.
The partnership coincides with IIT Kharagpur’s Platinum Jubilee year and aims to bring advanced research capabilities closer to community needs through targeted development initiatives. Under the Bidhayok Elaka Unnayan Pariyojna scheme, IIT Kharagpur will serve as the implementing agency for a development initiative supported by a large public investment.
The programme involves collaboration with key institutional stakeholders, including the Border Security Force in Malda, the Eastern Railway Malda Division, and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan at English Bazar. These partnerships are expected to facilitate coordinated implementation, operations, and long-term sustainability of the initiatives.
*Technology for Community Development*
Through this initiative, IIT Kharagpur will deploy its expertise in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and renewable energy to support community development in Malda. The project has two major components designed to address education, public safety, and sustainability.
*AI-Enabled Educational Infrastructure*
Two educational institutions—Mohadipur Gourio High School and Akurmoni Coronation Institution—will be equipped with advanced AI-enabled smart classroom infrastructure. The facilities will include modern STEM laboratories with robotics and IoT components, along with immersive learning tools such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) for subjects including mathematics and life sciences. The initiative aims to strengthen digital learning ecosystems and expand access to contemporary technology-based education.
*Solar Lighting for Safety and Sustainability*
A large-scale solar lighting network will be installed at strategically identified public locations to improve safety and environmental sustainability. Installations will support enhanced visibility and monitoring in select areas associated with the Border Security Force, as well as public zones connected to the Eastern Railway network, including parks, wetlands, and community spaces. Additional installations at educational and sports facilities, including the Birsa Munda Sports Complex and Kendriya Vidyalaya in English Bazar, will enable safe evening activities and community engagement.
The solar infrastructure is designed as a grid-independent system that contributes to long-term environmental sustainability while reducing carbon emissions over its operational lifespan.
*Institutional Commitment*
Speaking on the collaboration, *Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur,* noted that the initiative reflects the Institute’s continued commitment to applying science and technology for societal benefit. He highlighted the importance of translating advanced research into practical solutions that support education, sustainability, and public welfare.
As an Institution of National Importance, IIT Kharagpur will oversee implementation with a focus on transparency, technical rigor, and timely delivery. The project is expected to be completed within an accelerated implementation schedule following the formal release of funds, *facilitated by Smt Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary, Member of the Legislative Assembly, under the Bidhayok Elaka Unnayan Pariyojna scheme.*
