Dear Members,
Today, as per our appointment, a delegation of the Kharagpur Chamber of Commerce, along with representatives of different market organisations and associations, met the Officer-in-Charge of Kharagpur Town Police Station, Shri Amit Kumar Mitra, to discuss the ongoing issues related to the Railway Markets of Kharagpur, particularly the recent traffic fines and parking problems.
Before meeting the I/C, our delegation also met the Additional SP, Bushra bano ,IPS, at her
office. Both officers gave us their assurance of cooperation regarding the recent issues affecting the Railway Market areas.
Main issue: Parking and Traffic Fines
One of the major points discussed was the problem of vehicles being parked by customers and visitors coming to different markets of Kharagpur.
We requested that:
People should not be unnecessarily fined for parking their vehicles where no proper parking facility has been provided.
Before strict enforcement/fines are imposed, proper designated parking zones should be arranged.
Since a large portion of Kharagpur’s market areas is connected with Railway land, we requested that the Railway Administration should first provide suitable parking areas for customers, traders and visitors.
The administration and Railway authorities should work together to find a practical and permanent parking solution.
We will request the DRM, Kharagpur, to arrange proper parking zones at suitable locations for people visiting Gole Bazar, Nimpura and other important market areas of Kharagpur.
The objective is not to oppose traffic rules, but to ensure that proper facilities are provided first and enforcement is carried out fairly thereafter.
Railway–Administration Coordination
During the discussion, it was also pointed out that Kharagpur is a vast area and a large number of important markets are connected with Railway land.
The officers also expressed the need for better cooperation from the Railway Administration in matters concerning public facilities, traffic management and parking.
KCC will therefore take up the matter with the DRM, Kharagpur, requesting suitable parking arrangements in and around the major Railway Market areas.
Other Railway Market Issues
We also discussed the broader concerns of traders and requested better coordination between:
Railway Administration + Police + Local Administration + Chamber of Commerce + Market Associations
so that problems relating to traders and visitors can be addressed peacefully and practically.
