*End of the “Closed Gate” Era: Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Unlocked Birbhum & Asansol with Two Landmark Railway Overbridge*
Kolkata, February 8, 2026
The “stop-and-go” era for the residents of Birbhum and Paschim Bardhaman officially ended. Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, inaugurated the Siuri Road Over Bridge (ROB) and dedicated the Kumarpur Road Over Bridge to the Nation via Video Conferencing. Joining the ceremony was Shri Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition, West Bengal Legislative Assembly, to mark this milestone in the region’s journey toward rapid modernization.
On this momentous occasion, the region expressed its profound gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, whose vision of “Gati Shakti” and commitment to transforming Indian Railways made these world-class infrastructure projects a reality for the people of West Bengal.
*Siuri ROB: Birbhum’s New ₹42 Crore Lifeline*
For decades, the “22B/T” level crossing was a symbol of frustration, forcing commuters into 30-minute waits as trains passed. Today, that wait becomes history. The Siuri ROB is more than just a bridge; it is a permanent solution for a district on the move.
• Seconds Save Lives: Patients being rushed from Siuri District Hospital to Bolpur or Kolkata will no longer face life-threatening delays. The “Golden Hour” is finally protected from train schedules.
• A Bridge to Education & Culture: Students heading to Visva-Bharati University can now commute with clockwork precision. The bridge also turns Bolpur’s amenities into a “quick commute” for Siuri residents, making weekend visits to Sonajhuri Haat or the Kankalitala Temple effortless.
• Sweetening the Economy: Siuri’s world-famous Murabba and Achar now have a high-speed path to the tourist-heavy markets of Shantiniketan, boosting local small businesses and vendors.
• Real Estate & Relief: Beyond the psychological relief of seeing an open road, property values in the Siuri-Bolpur corridor are set to soar as connectivity reaches international standards.
*Kumarpur ROB: The High-Speed Heart of GT Road*
While Siuri celebrates its new lifeline, the Kumarpur ROB in Paschim Bardhaman is set to revolutionize the industrial flow of the Grand Trunk Road. By removing the primary “choke point” of the city, this bridge ensures that the wheels of industry never stop turning.
• Fuelling the Industrial Engine: Heavy vehicles carrying coal and steel can now bypass the paralyzing traffic tailbacks of the past, streamlining the supply chain between West Bengal and the Jharkhand border.
• Bypass the Stress: Thousands of commuters will save significantly on fuel costs by eliminating engine idling. The bridge permanently removes the risk of accidents at what was once a high-danger railway intersection.
• Integrating the City: Suburban areas like Barachak are now seamlessly linked to the Asansol city center, ensuring that daily-wage earners, office goers, and students are never late for their commitments.
*Engineering Progress for a New Bengal*
These two projects represent a combined vision of all-weather accessibility and industrial strength. By replacing risky level crossings with state-of-the-art engineering, the Ministry of Railways is ensuring that the spirit of Birbhum and the industrial grit of Paschim Bardhaman are no longer held back by a “closed gate.”
