*IIT Kharagpur Professor Receives Prestigious International Groundwater Excellence Award*

Prof Abhijit Mukherjee, Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, has been conferred the prestigious Groundwater Excellence Award by the International Association of Hydrogeologists – Indian National Chapter (INC).

The award, presented annually, recognizes outstanding contributions to groundwater research. The IAH, headquartered in the United Kingdom and represented in over 135 countries, is the world’s largest association of groundwater professionals. The Indian National Chapter selects a distinguished scientist each year for this high honor.

The President of IAH-INC, who also serves as Vice President of IAH-Asia, conferred the award following the recommendation of a three-member jury. The citation acknowledged Prof. Mukherjee’s long-standing contributions to groundwater science and its sustainable management.

Prof. Mukherjee is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in groundwater pollution and environmental sustainability. His distinguished career includes several prestigious honors, including the National Geoscience Award (2014), conferred by the President of India, and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2020). He is also the first Indian to be elected as a Fellow of both the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union.

This recognition further strengthens IIT Kharagpur’s position as a global leader in cutting-edge research addressing critical environmental challenges.
