Successful Total Knee Replacement of a 60-Year-Old Woman Marks a Milestone at the Trauma Centre
Asansol, September 16: On Monday, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, a successful bilateral total knee replacement surgery was performed for the first time at the Trauma Centre of Asansol District Hospital. The significant operation was carried out by Dr. Nirjhar Maji, Orthopaedic Surgeon at the district hospital.
The 60-year-old patient, Jharna Das, a resident of Sukantapally, Asansol, had been suffering from severe knee pain for a long time. Following the successful surgery, her condition is currently reported to be stable. She will remain admitted to the hospital for a few more days under the supervision of doctors.
District Hospital Superintendent Dr. Tapan Kumar Biswas stated that the operation, performed on Monday, was conducted by Dr. Nirjhar Maji with the assistance of spinal anaesthesia specialist Dr. Pranab Dutta and his team. The nursing staff and operation theatre support personnel of the district hospital also played an important role in the procedure.
He further informed that the knee implants required for the patient were arranged through the stores of Asansol District Hospital and the District Health Department (CMOH Office). With the cooperation of all concerned staff, this became the first successful operation of its kind to be performed at the district hospital and its Trauma Centre.
According to district hospital sources, Jharna Das had been experiencing severe knee problems for a considerable period. She was unable to sit with her knees bent for long periods and even faced difficulty using the toilet. Her knee pain became particularly severe at night, causing her considerable difficulty in sleeping.
Approximately one and a half months ago, Jharna Devi visited the outpatient department of Asansol District Hospital to consult Dr. Nirjhar Maji. After conducting various medical examinations, the doctor found that both of her knees had developed severe damage and were no longer functioning normally. The doctor informed her family about the condition and advised bilateral knee replacement surgery, to which the family agreed.
Accordingly, Jharna Das was admitted to the district hospital around four days ago, where the successful bilateral knee replacement surgery was performed on Monday. The successful completion of this complex procedure at Asansol District Hospital has brought great joy to the patient’s family.
